Core Program

Temporary Housing Assistance

When a family faces sudden displacement — whether due to fire, domestic crisis, eviction, or other emergency — finding safe shelter immediately can feel impossible. Habayit maintains a network of vetted temporary placements across Brooklyn and surrounding boroughs to provide families with a safe, dignified place to land.

Our temporary housing is not a shelter system. Families are placed in real homes, supported accommodations, and community-based housing — preserving privacy and maintaining as much normalcy as possible for children and adults alike.

  • Same-day and next-day placement available for crisis situations
  • Vetted, safe, and dignified accommodations — never institutional
  • Placements maintained for up to 90 days while permanent housing is secured
  • Children's schooling continuity protected during placement
  • Confidential — we do not share family information without consent

Wrap-Around Care

Family Support Services

Housing instability is rarely caused by a single factor. Our Family Support Services address the underlying challenges that lead families to crisis — providing holistic, trauma-informed care that goes well beyond finding a place to sleep.

Each family works with a dedicated case manager who coordinates care, connects resources, and provides a consistent point of contact throughout their journey with Habayit.

  • Dedicated case manager assigned to every family
  • Mental health and counseling referrals
  • Domestic violence support and safety planning
  • Parenting support and family strengthening workshops
  • Follow-up support for up to 12 months post-transition

Navigator Program

Resource Navigation & Benefits Enrollment

New York City offers a wide range of programs and benefits for families in need — but navigating the system is complex, time-consuming, and can feel overwhelming. Our Resource Navigators serve as expert guides, helping families identify and access every program they may be entitled to.

We work across city, state, and federal programs, including emergency rental assistance, food benefits, health coverage, employment training, and legal services.

  • NYC Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) guidance
  • SNAP food benefits enrollment support
  • Medicaid and health insurance access
  • Legal aid referrals for eviction, immigration, and family matters
  • Employment services, job training, and workforce development referrals

Children's Program

Children's Stability Program

Children are often the silent victims of family housing crises — forced to change schools, lose friendships, and cope with disruption at critical stages of development. Our Children's Stability Program is built on a single conviction: a family's housing crisis should never become a child's educational crisis.

We work directly with New York City schools, community tutors, and social-emotional support providers to ensure children in our program remain enrolled, attended, and thriving.

  • School enrollment and transfer support
  • Free tutoring and homework support
  • School supply and uniform assistance
  • Social-emotional counseling referrals
  • After-school program connections
  • Liaison with teachers and school administrators during transitions

Community Program

Community Outreach & Education

Prevention is as important as intervention. Our Community Outreach Program builds awareness, skills, and connections across Brooklyn's neighborhoods — helping families understand their rights, access resources before crisis strikes, and build community bonds that provide resilience.

We partner with synagogues, mosques, churches, community centers, and local organizations to host free workshops, community events, and resource fairs throughout the year.

  • Free community workshops on tenant rights and eviction prevention
  • Annual family resource fair connecting 50+ service providers
  • Volunteer network and community host family program
  • Multilingual outreach in English, Hebrew, Spanish, and Russian
  • Partnership with NYC Housing Court and legal clinics

Transitional Services

Transitional Support & Permanent Housing

Temporary placement is the first step — not the destination. Our Transitional Support team works with families from day one to build a realistic path toward permanent, stable housing. We connect families with NYC housing authorities, private landlords, affordable housing lotteries, and community land trusts.

Our follow-up program checks in with families for up to 12 months after they've transitioned — ensuring they remain stable and connected to the support they need.

  • Affordable housing application support and advocacy
  • NYC Housing Connect and NYCHA application guidance
  • Landlord mediation and tenant rights advocacy
  • First month's rent and security deposit assistance programs
  • 12-month follow-up support to prevent recurrence
